As expected
Ran 3 on the tready today. And, as I have always suspected, you can not trust the time, distance and pace displays on treadmills. I don't own one, so I can't really say that they are total crap. Maybe there is a way to calibrate them. I don't know. However, when compared with my foot pod data... yeah, there are some sizable discrepancies.
First off, my foot pod has shown itself to be quite accurate in comparison to my GPS data. I'll call that pretty decent. It's not perfect, but its not too far off. In the past, I have felt that my pace was faster than the tready displays have shown. Today, the data showed that quite well. I ran a 9:28 pace for 3 miles. The tready showed me at 10:10. That's quite a difference if you ask me.
This discrepancy was so noticeable, that when I walked several tenths to warm up before running and starting the data on my watch, the tready had me at head start in distance. Going by the distance from my foot pod, I finished before the tready showed I had reached 3 miles.
This breaks down to 0.2 miles difference over 3 miles. That doesn't sound like all that much, but 3 miles also isn't all that far of a run. I have a 7 mile run next, and that would put my about 1/2 a mile off track. I think that's pretty substantial. My footpod data and my GPS data have been far more accurate. Discrepancies on the order of 0.02 miles have been the norm.
So, I guess we could say, don't trust your treadmill data(*). Get a footpod, and your data will be 10x more accurate!
(*)of course, this data comparison has only been for one single treadmill... we'll see how other tready's compare over the coming months...
